Nov/Dec 2019 Membership Meeting

Hello! For the Holiday’s we will have one meeting on Dec 12th, instead of meetings at our usual time.

We will also be meeting at Oak Seattle (on Beacon Ave) instead of at the Library.

Agenda:

Introductions & Upcoming Events

  • Race & Social Justice Process

    • Do we need a "guiding statement" that shows our intentional efforts, and what would it be?

    • Review of our "Power Spreadsheet" & Launch of Theory of Change.

  • SNG Annual Priorities

  • 15th & Columbian: Now for 2021?

    • Review the recent news that the project is canceled/unfunded.

    • Discuss recent School Traffic Safety Committee Information & PTSA Information

    • Discuss updates from SDOT regarding project.

  • Beacon & Columbian (Columbian Way PBLs)

    • SDOT is updating the intersection and changing the E/W approaches along Columbian Way at Beacon.

    • Change: Prohibiting Left Turns onto Beacon Ave NB/SB (No Change to Left Turns from Beacon to Columbian Way EB/WB)

    • Change: Bike Lanes will now go to the intersection (instead of converting to a "mixing zone"/right turn lane)

      • Side Note: We should have someone see if the Middle School students begin to travel via the intersection/bike lane, many students go up on the sidewalk when they approach Beacon instead of dealing with the mixing zone.

    • Change: New Bike Signals, and Bike Signal phases are being installed to remove right turn conflicts, however, the change may not seem intuitive/not preferred by cyclists as they will have a phase where right turn/straight cars can go but bikes can't (similar to Second Ave). Not really sure how to solve this issue other then ask Cyclists to be smart and make the right choices for them.

  • Beacon Ave Trail

    • SDOT Has funded 300K in outreach for the Beacon Ave Trail (100K each for three segments: Bridge to Spokane, Spokane to Columbian, Columbian to 39th). This funding is for outreach and design and is specifically allocated to the Beacon Ave Corridor but it should be noted that SDOT is currently calling these "bike funds" until they pick an alignment.

      • This distinction is important because South of Columbian Way the bike faciliy is expected to be on the Beacon Ave Path (Median Trail), however, that's technically not decided yet. We'll have to encourage SDOT to make that decision quickly to help reduce time spent on ideas they're unlikely to implement (such as removing all the residential parking to add a PBL).

      • It should also be noted that North of Spokane SDOT does not attribute the alignment to Beacon Ave at all, this is because it's not in the BMP and there hasn't been outreach. For now it's more of just a "north/south" connection in the NBH area to Downtown really.

    • 10MM in funding for construction was also allocated to three projects to share (it's unclear how that allocation will work out) but the funds must be spend on Rainier/Mt Baker, MLK or Beacon.

  • Anything Else/RoundTable
